In this article I will show you how I use the beetle jail in my Slovenian AZ beehive.

Please note that not all of this type of beetle trap will work with AZ frames. The one shown here was purchased at a local bee supply store and does not fit. As you can see the arms are too long to properly support the trap.

Here is one that I purchased from Amazon. They fit perfectly.

10 Piece Beekeeping Beetle Trap

If you do purchase something else, I recommend purchasing only a couple to see if they fit your frames.

Filling the Trap

The trap has two larger compartments and a smaller center compartment.

I used a small spoon to add a small amount of agave nectar. I then close the small lid to this chamber to keep the beetles out of it.

Note that they can still smell it.

I use a small syringe to fill the larger chambers 1/3 full of vegetable oil.

The lids are then closed and its ready to install into the hive.

I had been using this 5ml syringe but have since moved to using these 10mm syringes.

The bottoms of the traps are flat so they will set upright but are a little tippy. For this reason, I stick them on top of an extra frame on my frame rack.

Installing the Traps

I stick one of the traps just off the main cluster in the middle section of the hive by sliding it over one of the frames. I push it back far enough so that the frame spacers on the rear screen will not come in contact with the trap.

Note that this one is a tight fit due to the slightly warped shelf above the frames. Once the rear screen is installed it will push the shelf back in-place.

Here I am installing one on the lower section of the hive.

Cleanup

After a month or so the traps can get pretty nasty and need to be cleaned.

I found the best way to do this is with a heated ultrasonic cleaner.

Iā€™m just using water and some dish soap.

I purchased my cleaner here:

While not spotless, the heated ultrasonic cleaner does to a good job. These are ready to be used again.

Conclusion

The bettle jails do work. If you fine you are not catching any beetles, just move the trap.
